How to switch savings, including moving a cash ISA safely
Facts checked 30 October 2026
Most switches take a few minutes online. The order of steps matters more than the speed.
Ordinary savings
- Open the new account on the bank's own website or app. You'll need ID and your current account details.
- Check the new account shows the rate you expected before you move money.
- Move the money from your old account. Watch for notice periods or withdrawal limits on the old one.
- Close the old account if you don't need it, so it doesn't sit forgotten at a low rate.
Cash ISAs
Don't withdraw the money yourself. Open the new ISA and ask the new provider to transfer your existing ISA in; that keeps it tax-free and doesn't use this year's allowance. Check that the new ISA accepts transfers in, and whether your old ISA charges a penalty for leaving a fixed term early.
Stay safe
We never ask you to send money to us, and we never contact you to move savings. Only apply on the bank's own website. How to spot a fake comparison site.
